Cadillac Revives XT5 and XT6 Gas-Powered SUVs
Cadillac has made a significant U-turn in its product strategy, announcing the return of its gasoline-powered XT5 and XT6 SUV models. This decision comes after the luxury automaker had previously phased out these vehicles, signaling a recalibration of its approach amid the automotive industry's shift towards electrification.

The Unexpected Comeback: Cadillac's Strategic Reversal

Cadillac's Initial Discontinuation and Future Plans

Early in 2025, Cadillac announced the discontinuation of the XT6, citing a crowded lineup alongside the popular Escalade and the then-upcoming Vistiq. This move was part of a broader strategy to prioritize electric vehicles and streamline its SUV offerings.

The Return of XT5 and XT6

However, just over a year later, Cadillac Global Vice President Kristian Aquilina confirmed on LinkedIn that both the XT6 and the smaller XT5 would be making a comeback. Crucially, these returning models will be equipped with gasoline engines, indicating a response to market demands for traditional internal combustion vehicles.

Sales Performance and Market Demand for Gasoline Models

Despite its initial discontinuation, the XT6 demonstrated solid sales figures, moving over 20,000 units in its final year. While the XT5's sales were less robust, Cadillac believes there is still a strong enough appetite for gasoline-powered SUVs to justify their reintroduction. These models will join the next-generation CT5 sedan in the brand's portfolio.

The XT4's Departure: A Quiet Exit

In contrast to the XT5 and XT6, the compact XT4 quietly exited production towards the end of 2024, after selling nearly 16,000 units in its last year. There has been no indication of a return for this model.

Cadillac's Evolving EV Strategy

This reintroduction of gasoline SUVs highlights Cadillac's adjusted strategy regarding electric vehicles. While electric models like the Escalade IQ, Optiq, and Vistiq remain central to its long-term vision, the brand acknowledges that a substantial portion of luxury SUV consumers are not yet ready to transition to fully electric vehicles. The exact return date for the XT5 and XT6 has not yet been announced, but their official confirmation suggests an imminent re-launch.
